Play Based Learning

"The impulse to play
comes from a natural desire
to understand the world."
~NAEYC

Learning Through Play

Early learning experiences rooted in play lay the foundation for lifelong success. Through play-based learning, especially guided play, children engage in activities that are both child-led and teach-supported - combining joy, curiosity, and intentional learning.

Guided play is meaningful, engaging, and focused on the process rather than the outcome. It allows children to explore, make discoveries, and naturally connect what they learn to their everyday lives.

Social-Emotional Development Through Play

Play is essential for helping children understand themselves and others. Through shared experiences, children learn to:

  • Build relationships and develop empathy

  • Practice cooperation, teamwork, and communication

  • Navigate and resolve conflicts

  • Grow in confidence and independence

As children interact with peers, they begin to develop a strong sense of self. Making choices, initiating play, and participating in group activities encourages them to become confident, active learners.

Imaginative and role play also allow children to explore different aspects of emotions, helping them better understand real-life situations and the impact of their actions.

Creative experiences, such as process-focused art, encourage self-expression and exploration without pressure - fostering confidence, creativity, and a sense of accomplishment.

Play also provides a healthy outlet for releasing stress and managing emotions.

Cognitive Development Through Play

Play supports brain development and strengthens important thinking skills such as problem-solving, language, and early literacy.

|During play, children use imagination and symbols - an important foundation for reading, writing, and math. For example, a stick may become a fishing rod or a basket a boat, helping children understand how one object can represent another.

Through activities like dramatic play, storytelling, and art, children:

  • Develop language and communication skills

  • Practice expressing ideas and telling stories

  • Begin to understand letters, symbols, and meaning

Play also introduces early math and science concepts. As children explore, build, and experiment, they naturally learn about cause and effect, patterns, textures, and how the world works.

Physical Development Through Play

Play is essential for building strong, healthy bodies.  It supports both gross (large movements) and fine (small, precise movements) motor skills.

Through play, children:

  • Build strength, coordination, and balance

  • Engage in healthy physical activity

  • Explore different textures and sensory experiences

Activities like running, climbing, jumping, and creative play help children develop confidence in how they move and use their bodies. Hands-on experiences - such as art and sensory play - further strengthen coordination and fine motor skills.
